I like the metaphor of Callie Mercer stripping his father’ coat off of Harley before on I’m conflicted. This is without a doubt hands down, absolutely one of my favorite, favorite books.

The tendency, of course, is to compare this with the other novels in the Oprah stable, but it pulls me in a different direction; there’s more here that invites comparison with Ian McEwan’s weepingly good first novel, The Cement Garden and not just the overall plot, either. He and his sisters grew up in this situation, and they all reacted to it in different ways.
