Aug 21, Umair Hasan added it. Very unclear derivations at times and very big logical steps missing. Thanks for telling us about the problem. It makes me wonder why people bother searching for enlightenment in ancient tomes. Return to Book Page. This book explained the mysteries hinted at in the other book. This is a great, accessible primer on vector calculus. May 21, Andrew rated it it was amazing.

While the small size makes for a quick and easy read, it certainly would not hurt culr the next edition was bumped up to pages. Although the author has justified the existence sdhey the 4th edition largely due to the ins This book is all about intuition rather than rigor.

Multi scbey calculus would be helpful too, I found to be able to compensate using a search schfy. Sahil rated it it was amazing Mar 16, Marco rated it did not like it Nov 17, I recommend the Physics undergrad read this the summer before their first year of university studies.

I didn’t discover it until the end of my course in vector calculus, and I wish I had used it as a companion piece for the course. May 28, Aneece rated it really liked it Shelves: I highly recommend it.

DIV, Grad, Curl, and All That: An Informal Text on Vector Calculus

One of the most unhelpful physics books i’ve read. A short and concise book for getting intuition on vector calculus as a tool for physics. Almost always they make you go back to the text of the chapter for a second read.

Confusing unclear derivation of gradd gradient. These kind of examples are simply not here. This book is all about intuition rather than rigor. Since the publication of the First Edition over thirty years ago, Div, Grad, Curl, and All That has been widely renowned for its clear and concise coverage of vector calculus, helping science and engineering students gain a thorough understanding of gradient, curl, and Laplacian operators without required knowledge of advanced mathematics.

Jun 25, Guillaume Koenig rated it it was amazing. Price Kagey rated it really liked it Oct 23, This math book is incredibly fun to read: I also found my understanding of calculus to improve as a result of doing them. If you like books and love to build cool products, we may be looking gra you. Open Preview See a Problem? Want to Read Currently Reading Read. Xurl proof may reassure you that a theorem is true, but give you no insight into how it was discovered.

Some exercises in the last chapter assumes knowledge of physics I grd have so I skipped those. Jun 13, Mostafa Alkady rated it it was amazing. If you are a physics student struggling to put precise physical intuition into divergence, gradient and curl operations, this text is a quick study.

Div grad curl was an incredible grd to me. All one needs is a semester of calc, and this book. So overall its an intuitive first introduction hrad the subject that requires elementary calculus as the only prerequisite. Jul 31, Erickson rated it it was amazing Shelves: A lot of meaningful things could be added as there are a lot of topics that beg for this kind of basic yet highly intuitive and pictorial exposition.

May 12, Ronald Lett rated it really liked it Shelves: A decent understanding of trigonometry and single variable calculus are mandatory prerequisites. I really dig it. Exercises are more difficult as chapters progress. Sep 22, Kourtney rated it it was amazing.

Curk to Read saving…. This book satisfies the desire for derivation and motivation over rigor. Sep 27, Rakibullah Sazib rated it really liked it.

DIV, Grad, Curl, and All That: An Informal Text on Vector Calculus by Harry M. Schey

I give it a 4-star rating because while it has many very good points that differentiate it from other books on Vector Calculus, it also has some restrictions. Although the author has justified the existence of the 4th edition largely due to the insertion of more examples, I still think that they are not enough. It’s also nice to get a glimpse of the utility of these important theorems. If you’re interested by the historical context around Maxwell’s equations, there is episode 10 of the Dic series “Cosmos” by Neil deGrasse Tyson rest of the show is pretty cool tooand chapter 11 of “17 Equations That Changed The World” by Ian Stewart other chapters pretty cool too, with 8 on the wave equation as known before discovered in electromagnetism.

Arc rated it really liked it Jun 25, This book was recommended to me while I was discussing how I wanted to review my college math textbooks No trivia or quizzes yet. These restrictions are just enough to justify a 4-star rating, although Furl would gladly give it an easy 5-star rating if it had just a bit more examples.

And the reason is that most of them are trivial.
